Patient journey

1. Your consultation

Paul or Vish will thoroughly examine your oral health, discuss your unique needs, and explain the implant process. Using the CBCT scanner, they’ll assess your bone structure and create a personalised treatment plan.

Patient journey

2. Your Treatment

A titanium post will be placed into your jawbone, to form the foundation for the new tooth. You’ll experience minimal discomfort thanks to the anaesthetic. The implant then fuses with your bone over time. Your temporary crown will be replaced with the permanent crown once your gum has fully healed.

Patient journey

3. Aftercare

After your procedure, gently rinse with saltwater to reduce swelling and keep the area clean. Stick to soft foods for the first few days and avoid smoking to promote healing. If you have any concerns, please reach out to our team and we’ll support you.

Dental Implants FAQs

  • A dental implant is a small titanium post that replaces the root of a missing tooth. It sits in your jawbone, and once it has bonded with the bone it holds a crown, bridge or denture firmly in place.

That root is what sets implants apart. Traditional dentures rest on your gums and can slip when you eat or talk. An implant is anchored, so your new tooth feels and works much more like the one you lost. You can bite into an apple, laugh at the dinner table, and stop thinking about your teeth.

Implants also help protect your jaw. When a tooth is lost, the bone that used to support it slowly shrinks because it’s no longer being used. Over time this can change the shape of your face and give the cheeks and lips a sunken look. An implant puts that bone back to work, which helps keep it in place.

  • Everything starts with planning. Before any treatment, Paul or Vish takes a 3D scan with our in-house CBCT scanner. This shows the height, width and density of your jawbone, along with the position of nerves and sinuses, so they can plan exactly where each implant should go.

On the day, your mouth is fully numbed with local anaesthetic. Your dentist makes a small opening in the gum and places the titanium post into the bone. The gum is closed around it, and in many cases you’ll leave with a temporary tooth so there’s no visible gap.

Then comes healing. Over the following months, the implant fuses with your jawbone, a process called osseointegration. This usually takes around three to six months, depending on your bone and where the implant sits.

Once it has fully bonded, a small connector called an abutment is fitted to the implant. We take impressions, and your custom crown is made to match the shape and shade of your natural teeth.

  • Most adults with missing teeth can have implants, but a few things need checking first, and that’s what your consultation is for.

Healthy gums matter most. Gum disease is a leading cause of implant problems, so if there’s any active infection we’ll treat it before anything else. You’ll also need enough jawbone to hold the implant securely. If a tooth has been missing for a long time, the bone may have thinned. That doesn’t rule you out. A bone graft can rebuild the area, and your CBCT scan tells us whether you need one before we plan anything.

Some factors raise the risk of an implant failing, and we’ll be honest with you about them. Smoking is one of the biggest because it slows healing. Poorly controlled diabetes, some medications and heavy teeth grinding can also affect results. Implants usually aren’t placed until the jaw has finished growing, which for most people is in their late teens or early twenties.

Paul or Vish will go through your medical history, examine your mouth and explain every option, including alternatives like bridges or dentures, so you can make a fully informed choice.

  • Most patients are surprised by how comfortable it is. Before we start, the area is completely numbed with local anaesthetic, so you’ll feel some pressure but no pain. Many people tell us it felt no worse than having a filling.

If you’re anxious, let us know when you book. We can talk through sedation options that help you feel calm and relaxed during the procedure.

Afterwards, expect some tenderness, swelling and possibly mild bruising for a few days while the gum heals. This tends to peak around day two or three, then settles. Over-the-counter painkillers are normally enough, and a cold compress on the cheek helps with swelling.

  • With good care, an implant can last for many years, and for a lot of people it lasts a lifetime. The titanium post is bonded to your jawbone and can’t decay the way a natural tooth can.

The crown on top is a different story. It takes the full force of every bite, so like any crown it wears over time. Most last around 10 to 15 years before they need replacing. That’s a simple appointment. The old crown comes off and a new one is fitted to the same implant, with no further surgery.

The biggest threat to an implant is infection of the gum and bone around it, known as peri-implantitis. It works much like gum disease and can cause bone loss if it isn’t treated. You can protect your implant by:

    • brushing twice a day and cleaning between your teeth
    • seeing our hygienist regularly
    • keeping up with check-ups so we catch problems early
    • not smoking
  • Here at our Melton Mowbray practice, we offer All-on-4 dentures, which gives you a full set of replacement teeth using only four strategically placed implants. This innovative approach eliminates the need for multiple surgeries and bone grafting, providing a faster, less invasive solution for full-arch restoration.

You don’t need an implant for every missing tooth. With All-on-4, a full arch of fixed teeth is supported by just four implants. The back two are placed at an angle to make the most of the bone you have, which often means we can avoid a bone graft, even if you’ve lost some bone over the years.

In many cases you can leave on the same day with a fixed temporary set of teeth. Once the implants have healed and bonded, usually after a few months, these are swapped for your permanent, custom-made bridge.

All-on-4 isn’t the only route. Depending on your bone and what you’re hoping for, you might suit:

    • more implants per arch, often five or six, for extra support
    • implant dentures, which clip onto a small number of implants and can be removed for cleaning

Your CBCT scan shows exactly how much bone you have to work with, and Paul or Vish will explain which approach suits you and why.
