Because only four implants are needed per arch, and they are angled to use your existing bone, the treatment is often quicker, less invasive and more affordable than placing a separate implant for every tooth, and it frequently avoids the need for bone grafting.

Losing teeth affects far more than appearance. It can make eating and speaking harder, knock your confidence, and set off changes in the mouth that build up over time. When a tooth is lost, the jawbone that used to support it gradually shrinks away, and neighbouring teeth can drift or tilt into the gap, which makes any future treatment more complicated the longer it is left. Implants are the only tooth replacement that also replaces the root, which is what allows them to slow that bone loss and keep the jaw healthier.

With good care, the implants themselves- the titanium posts in the jaw- can last for many years and often decades, and in many cases a lifetime. The fixed bridge of teeth attached to them is the part that takes the daily wear, so that is usually what needs attention over time and may need replacing after around ten to fifteen years. How long everything lasts comes down largely to looking after it well and keeping up your reviews. That means cleaning thoroughly around and underneath the bridge, often with a water flosser or special implant floss, not smoking, and coming in for regular maintenance visits so we can check the implants and the surrounding gums stay healthy. Well cared for, All-on-4 is designed to be a long-term, durable solution.

It is natural to worry about this, but the procedure is more comfortable than most people expect. The surgery is carried out under local anaesthetic so the area is fully numbed and you should not feel pain while the implants are placed, and sedation is available if you would feel more relaxed with it, which many patients having this kind of treatment choose. Afterwards it is normal to have some swelling, bruising and soreness for a few days, which tends to peak in the first two to three days and then settles. This is usually well managed with the pain relief we prescribe, along with ice packs and a soft diet while things heal.

All-on-4 suits a lot of people, particularly those missing most or all of their teeth in a jaw, those with failing teeth that need removing, or anyone tired of a loose denture, but it is not right for everyone, so every case is assessed individually. One of its real strengths is that the angled implants make good use of available bone, so it is often possible even for people who have been told they do not have enough bone for traditional implants. That said, your general health, gum health, and habits such as smoking all affect how well the implants heal and settle, and heavy smoking in particular lowers the success rate.
