Gum Treatment

At High Street Dental Care (HSDC) our periodontal team headed by Kapil Sanghi and our very skilled Dental Hygienists will provide you with the highest possible care for your gums.

Having healthy gums is the foundation of not only a healthy confident smile but there is recent scientific evidence that there may be a causal link between periodontal disease and other illnesses such as Diabetes and Heart disease.

Signs and symptoms of gum disease

Healthy gums should be pink, firm and keep your teeth securely in place. Your gums should not bleed when you touch or brush them.

Gum disease is not always painful and you may be unaware you have it. This is why it is important to have regular dental checkups.

Early Symptoms

  • Red and swollen gums
  • Bleeding gums after brushing or flossing your teeth.

Advanced Symptoms

  • Bad breath (halitosis)
  • An unpleasant taste in your mouth
  • Loose teeth
  • Gum abscess (collections of pus that develop under your gums or teeth)

Treatment

Scale and polish -This is carried out by the Dentist or one of our team of Dental Hygienists. This involves the removal of plaque and tartar (hardened plaque) that can build up on your teeth.

The Hygienist will also take time to instruct you on a good personal oral hygiene regime.

Root planing

In some cases of gum disease, root planing may be required. This is a deep clean under the gums that gets rid of bacteria from the roots of your teeth. Local a aesthetic is quite often used for this procedure.

Further treatment

If you have severe gum disease further treatment might be required such as periodontal surgery. This is carried out by Dr Kapil Sanghi.

Due to great advances in dentistry people are keeping their teeth for much longer, so as a dental profession we are seeing much more gum problems than ever before. Gum disease becomes worse with age.

At High Street Dental Care we are focused on maintaining the health of your gums as this is the foundation of a healthy, good looking smile.
